Department of Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics
Orthodontics is the area of dentistry concerned with the supervision, guidance and correction of the growing and mature dento-facial structure, including those conditions that require movement of teeth or correction of mal relationships and malformations of related structures by the adjustment of relationships between and among teeth and facial bones by the application of forces and / or the stimulation and redirection of the functional forces within the craniofacial complex.
Orthodontics is a specialty that addresses the diagnosis, prevention, management, and correction of mal-positioned teeth and jaws. It may also address the modification of facial growth, known as dentofacial orthopedics.
On an average, the department undertakes 13,500 to 15,000 patients every year. The department of orthodontics deals with prevention, interception and correction of various types of malocclusions.
Abnormal alignment of the teeth and jaws is very common. Orthodontic treatment may require several months to a few years, and entails using dental braces and other appliances – myofunctional appliances, fixed functional appliances to gradually adjust tooth position and jaw alignment.
Braces are usually placed on the front side of the teeth, but they may also be placed on the side facing the tongue (called lingual braces). Brackets made out of stainless steel or ceramic (tooth coloured) are bonded to the teeth using an adhesive. TAD’s (Mini implants), Bone screws, Infra Zygomatic crest (IZC) implants are frequently used when needed for the treatment.
Clear aligners are an alternative to braces, as many patients do not like the appearance of traditional metal braces, so they opt for clear removable aligners.
Regular Seminars, Journal Clubs, Case Discussions and Pedagogy are conducted by the Post Graduates on weekly basis. Research activities for the department such as Main Thesis, library dissertation, individual short studies and surveys are given special emphasis in the department.
Apart from regular academic activities both UG and PG students are encouraged to participate in various Conferences, PG Conventions, cultural, literary, sports and fun activities organised in our college, university as well as national level.
The section of Orthodontics has a wide range of activities covering all aspects of Orthodontics-
- Interceptive ,
- Corrective and Surgical.
