Biochemical studies have illuminated many aspects of disease and have opened up new therapeutic approaches towards many of them. BRL deals with the study and characterization of biological molecules. It is the study of the substances and chemical processes which occur in living organisms. It includes the identification and quantitative determination of the substances, studies of their structure, determining how they are synthesized and degraded in organisms, and elucidating their role in the operation of the organism. Substances studied in biochemistry include carbohydrates (including simple sugars and large polysaccharides), proteins (such as enzymes), ribonucleic acid (RNA) and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), lipids, minerals, vitamins, and hormones.

Biochemical studies are of immense importance in the drug development process to understand the properties of proteins, one of the most common drug targets. In this laboratory the researchers will develop and complete the research projects where they isolate, purify and characterize the proteins from the natural source. The researchers will also develop their own experimental procedures to obtain protein and characterize its properties and function. The major objective is to understand the chemical processes associated with living cells at the molecular level. To achieve this objective, researchers will attempt to isolate numerous molecules (biomolecules) found in cells, to determine their structures and to analyze how they function. The knowledge will be used in fighting illnesses, in development of new pharmaceuticals, and in many other inventions to help improve the quality of life. Biochemical research is related to life sciences and without biochemical background and knowledge, a thorough understanding of health and well-being is not possible. The aim of biochemical research lab is challenging, yet rewarding and can take many paths.
