OVERVIEW-TNAI (TRAINED NURSES’ ASSOCIATION OF INDIA)
The Trained Nurses’ Association of India is the national professional organization for nurses in India. It was established in 1908 and was initially known as the “Association of Nursing Superintendents.” The Government of India recognized TNAI as a service organization in 1950. Its headquarters are located in New Delhi.
Objectives of TNAI
- To uphold the dignity and honour of the nursing profession.
- To promote unity and cooperation among nurses.
- To improve the professional, educational, economic, and social status of nurses.
- To improve nursing education and nursing services in India.
- To protect the rights and welfare of nurses.
Functions of TNAI
1. Improvement of Nursing Education
- Frames standards for nursing education.
- Encourages uniformity in nursing curriculum and training.
- Organizes conferences, workshops, seminars, and continuing education programmes for nurses.
2. Setting Standards for Nursing Practice
- Establishes standards and qualifications for nursing practice.
- Promotes quality nursing care in hospitals and community settings.
3. Protection of Nurses’ Welfare
- Works for better salary, working conditions, and safety of nurses.
- Supports nurses in professional and legal matters.
- Promotes socio-economic welfare programmes for nurses.
4. Development of Ethical Practice
- Establishes and promotes a code of ethics for nurses.
- Encourages professional conduct and accountability.
5. Promotion of Research
- Encourages nursing research and evidence-based practice.
- Collaborates with national and international organizations for research activities.
6. Professional Development
- Provides opportunities for continuing nursing education.
- Conducts skill training and leadership development programmes.
7. Representation of Nurses
- Represents Indian nurses at national and international levels.
- Acts as the spokesperson for nurses regarding health policies and legislation.

- The “Nursing Journal of India” is the official journal of TNAI.
