Medical Education Unit(MEU) PCMS & RC: A Journey of more than a decade

Professional self-development of medical teachers with capacity building, and sustaining the critical mass of faculty in an institute is the backbone for building a learning culture. In PCMS & RC, Bhopal, the MEU was founded in 2007 by the MEU Team under the Leadership of Dr. Ashok Mhaske and Dean Dr. G.C. Dixit. Since then the MEU has conducted 16 Faculty development workshops under the aegis of regulatory bodies under supervision of MCI/NMC Observers. In a single FDP workshop, 30 Medical Teachers are trained by the MEU Resource Faculty, and on successful completion of the course, they are certified. The MEU conducted a Revised Basic Course Workshop(RBCW) in November 2017, and the CBME Curriculum Implementation Support Program-I & II in 2019, and 2020 respectively. In July 2021 and October 2021, two RBCW under supervision of NMC Observer were conducted in a year under the aegis of NMC, RTC, SAIMS, Indore. This year RBCW was conducted on 6th to 8th January 2022 under the NMC Observer. The objectives of the workshop are:

    1. Faculty Development – a continuous ongoing programme
    2. Capacity Building – professional self-development as an effective medical teacher
    3. Educational Research – Quality assurance in pursuit of educational excellence
    4. Strengthening Educational Process – building and sustaining robust educational system

The MEU currently has five FAIMER Fellows, five ACME Faculties, and dedicated faculty members in the team. With the roll out and implementation of the CBME curriculum for undergraduate medical students the MEU supports faculty training for institutional skills lab, implementation of Foundation Course, PG Orientation Programme, activities of the curriculum committee, support departments for the new curriculum time table and designing the course curriculum. Our MEU Team was appreciated by the NMC Inspectors during the last NMC inspection in October 2021 during their onsite visit to the ongoing workshop in the auditorium at People’s University. The strengths of MEU are a strong committed leadership, devoted resource faculties, collaborative teamwork, support from the institutional head and administrative authorities. The thrust of MEU is capacity building for effectively implementing competency based medical education. Our goal is to develop a center of excellence for strengthening the educational process, and upgrade to NMC Nodal Center.

Quality is a matter of continuous ongoing improvements
The Journey shall continue…
