What BA is and why it still matters in 2026
BA stands for Bachelor of Arts. It is one of the oldest undergraduate degrees in the country and also one of the most consistently misunderstood. The common assumption is that it is a fallback — what you do when you are not sure what else to do. That assumption costs a lot of students a degree that actually opens more doors than most people give it credit for.
India’s civil services produce some of the most powerful administrators in the country. The majority of UPSC toppers across the last decade came from humanities backgrounds. The media industry crossed ₹2.5 lakh crore in 2023 and is still growing. Every NGO, every policy body, every cultural organisation, every publishing house, every government department runs on people who can read, write, think critically and understand how society works. That is what BA builds.
The degree covers literature, history, political science, psychology, sociology and economics. It teaches analytical thinking, communication, research methodology and the ability to sit with complex questions about human behaviour and social systems. Those are not soft skills. They are the foundation of every profession that involves dealing with people, which is most of them.

Who can apply
Class 12 passed from any recognised board in any stream. Science, Commerce, Arts – all qualify. Minimum aggregate of 40% marks, one of the more accessible entry thresholds in higher education.
No subject restriction at the secondary level. A student who studied science in Class 12 and realised their real interest is in history, political science or psychology can walk straight into a BA programme without any barrier.
At DHSS – Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, People’s University Bhopal, admission is merit-based and processed through the university admissions portal. Check the eligibility criteria page before applying. Requirements are straightforward but worth confirming directly for the 2026 cycle.
Subjects and combinations available
Students at DHSS pick their subject combination from the following disciplines:
History, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Economics, English
The flexibility to choose your combination is one of the most underrated features of the BA degree. A student heading toward civil services will likely pick History, Political Science and Sociology. One heading toward media and communication will lean toward English, Psychology and Sociology. One interested in social work or NGO careers might pick Psychology, Sociology and Economics. The combination you build shapes the specific direction the degree takes.
Syllabus – what the three years cover
First year — Foundation
English Literature, General Hindi, Environmental Studies, Major Subject foundations, Communication Skills
Second year — Development
Advanced papers in chosen major subjects, Complementary discipline exploration, Research Methodology introduction, Elective courses
Third year — Specialisation
Specialised papers in major subjects, Contemporary issues and applications, Project work and dissertation, Career orientation programmes
Research methodology sits inside the syllabus from year two onward. This matters more than most students realise at the time. The ability to find information, evaluate sources, structure an argument and present findings in writing is what separates a graduate who can do things from one who can only talk about doing them. Those skills land in every interview, every job and every further study application.

What DHSS actually offers
The library at DHSS holds over 82,000 books across humanities and social science collections. That is not a number for the brochure. For students preparing for UPSC, MPPSC, or any competitive examination that requires deep reading and source-based research, access to that kind of library resource during the degree itself makes a real difference.
Workshops and seminars bring in scholars, field experts and practitioners through the year. Events and activities run literary forums, cultural programmes and debate sessions that build the communication and analytical skills the degree is supposed to produce. These are not extras. They are how the curriculum comes alive outside the classroom.
Competitive exam preparation for civil services is built into the department’s approach, not left to students to figure out on their own after graduating. For anyone seriously considering UPSC or MPPSC, that structure matters.
Go through the faculty page and the achievements section before making a decision. Faculty academic backgrounds and departmental achievements tell you more than any promotional content will.

Civil services is the most sought-after path from BA and for good reason. History, Political Science and Sociology map almost directly onto the UPSC General Studies papers. Students who spend three years reading seriously, writing regularly and thinking about governance, society and policy come out better prepared for that examination than most people who start preparing only after graduation.
Media and content is where BA graduates are finding the most entry-level opportunity right now. Every digital platform, every news organisation, every brand with a content team needs people who can write well and think clearly. Those are BA skills. The growth of the media industry in India means that demand is not going anywhere.
MA is the natural next step for students who want to specialise further. MA programmes at DHSS allow deeper specialisation in chosen humanities and social science disciplines and open teaching, research and policy roles that the undergraduate degree alone does not fully reach.
Placement support at People’s University runs through the academic year. Check those records directly before comparing institutions.
Should you pick this
BA works for students who are genuinely curious about how the world works. About history and why it keeps repeating. About politics and how decisions get made. About psychology and what drives human behaviour. About literature and what it means to tell a human story well.
It also works for students who are seriously considering civil services and want three years of structured reading and analytical thinking before they sit for UPSC or MPPSC. And it works for students heading into media, communication, HR, social work or any field where dealing with people is the core of the job.
What to check before choosing any BA college: Is the library actually usable and well stocked? Is competitive exam preparation part of the programme or left entirely to students? Are faculty actively engaged in their disciplines or purely administrative? Does the department run events and activities that go beyond sitting in lectures?
Those things separate a degree that builds something from one that just fills three years.
