What MDS actually is and why postgraduate dentistry matters in 2026

MDS stands for Master of Dental Surgery. Three years. Eight specialisation tracks. It is the postgraduate degree that takes a registered dentist from general practice into deep clinical specialisation — the level at which complex dental cases, surgical procedures, research and academic teaching all become part of what a practitioner is qualified to do.

India has roughly one dentist for every 10,000 people. That ratio improves as dental infrastructure expands but the shortage of specialists within dentistry remains acute. Orthodontists, oral surgeons, endodontists, periodontists — these are not general practitioners. They are specialists with three additional years of training beyond BDS and the demand for them across India’s growing private hospital chains, dental college departments and independent specialist practices is consistent and growing.

For a BDS graduate who wants to go further — into complex clinical work, into academic dentistry, into research or into the senior hospital and teaching roles that a bachelor’s degree alone does not reach — MDS is the required next step and the only formal route to specialist registration with the Dental Council of India.

Approvals, recognition and accreditation

People’s Dental Academy holds full approval from the Dental Council of India — the statutory body that governs dental education across the country and without whose approval no MDS programme can be legally offered or recognised.

The academy is affiliated to People’s University Bhopal, a UGC-recognised university. MDS degrees awarded by People’s Dental Academy carry the university affiliation that is required for registration with State Dental Councils across India and for eligibility in government and institutional recruitment.

University affiliation details and approval and recognition letters are available directly on the academy website for candidates who want to verify credentials before applying.

The academy also participates in NIRF — the National Institutional Ranking Framework — and the NIRF data for People’s Dental Academy is publicly available.

Who can apply

BDS degree from a DCI-approved institution with a successfully completed one-year internship. A valid NEET-MDS score. Both conditions are mandatory — DCI regulations require both the completed internship and NEET-MDS qualification for admission to any MDS programme in India.

NEET-MDS is the single national entrance examination for postgraduate dental admissions. Score, rank and category together determine which institutions and which specialisations a candidate can access through the counselling process.

At People’s Dental Academy, People’s University Bhopal, admission follows DCI guidelines and the counselling administered by the Directorate of Medical Education, Madhya Pradesh. Go through the eligibility criteria page before applying. Requirements for 2026 are worth confirming directly.

Specialisation tracks — eight directions the degree can go

Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics
Advanced root canal therapy, tooth restoration, dental trauma management, regenerative endodontics. The specialisation for dentists heading into complex restorative and endodontic practice or academic teaching in this area. Go through the Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics department for department-specific details.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Advanced surgical procedures involving the jaw, face, mouth and neck. Tumour removal, jaw reconstruction, cleft palate surgery, implant surgery, facial trauma management. The most surgically demanding MDS specialisation and the one with the clearest crossover into medical surgical settings. The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery department covers the department’s scope and faculty.

Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics
Braces, aligners, jaw alignment, facial growth modification. One of the highest-demand specialisations in private dental practice across India given the growing consumer awareness of orthodontic treatment. The Orthodontics department at People’s Dental Academy covers advanced fixed and removable appliance therapy.

Periodontics
Advanced gum disease treatment, bone grafting, implant placement, flap surgeries. The specialisation covering everything from non-surgical scaling to complex periodontal regeneration procedures. The Periodontics department runs the clinical training for this track.

Prosthodontics and Crown and Bridge
Full mouth rehabilitation, dental implants, complete and partial dentures, crowns and bridges. One of the most technically complex and commercially significant specialisations in dentistry given the scale of prosthetic dental need across India’s ageing and urban populations.

Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry
Children’s dentistry, dental anxiety management, preventive protocols, early orthodontic intervention, special care dentistry. The Pedodontics department handles this specialisation’s clinical training.

Oral Medicine and Radiology
Diagnosis of oral diseases, interpretation of dental radiographs, CBCT imaging, oral cancer screening, temporomandibular disorder management. The diagnostic specialisation within dentistry and one that is increasingly relevant as digital imaging technology becomes standard in dental practice. The Oral Medicine and Radiology department covers this track.

Public Health Dentistry
Community oral health, epidemiology, health policy, dental public health programme management, school dental health. For those heading into government health programmes, NGO-led oral health initiatives, policy advisory roles or academic public health dentistry. The Public Health Dentistry department runs this specialisation.

Syllabus — what the three years cover

Year one — Foundation and specialisation entry
Specialisation-specific basic sciences, Research Methodology, Dental Materials advanced study, Biostatistics, Review of BDS clinical foundations, Literature review and research protocol development

Year two — Advanced clinical and research
Advanced clinical procedures in chosen specialisation, Case presentations and journal club participation, Research work in progress, Inter-specialty academic exchange, Surgical and clinical case load building

Year three — Mastery and dissertation
Complex case management independently, Dissertation completion and submission, Viva preparation, Teaching and demonstrating to BDS students, Exit examination preparation

The dissertation is not a supplementary requirement. DCI mandates it. A well-executed MDS dissertation carries the candidate’s name into published dental literature, opens PhD and academic career pathways and demonstrates the research capability that senior institutional roles specifically look for.

Admission process for 2026

NEET-MDS score determines eligibility and rank. Counselling is administered by the Directorate of Medical Education, Madhya Pradesh. Candidates register through the state counselling portal, fill specialisation preferences, lock choices and receive allotment based on rank, category and seat availability.

For direct MDS admission enquiries at People’s Dental Academy, current intake details across all eight specialisations are available through the admissions portal. MDS seats are limited by specialisation — seats in high-demand tracks like Orthodontics and Oral Surgery fill earliest in the counselling cycle.

What People’s Dental Academy brings to MDS

Nine fully functional clinical departments — each corresponding to one of the nine MDS specialisation areas. Faculty who are practicing specialists in their fields alongside their academic roles. A functioning dental hospital attached to the academy where postgraduate students handle real complex cases under qualified supervision throughout the three years.

The clinics and lecture halls at People’s Dental Academy are built for postgraduate-level clinical training — not shared with undergraduate batches in ways that reduce exposure time for MDS students. Postgraduate training requires high case volume in the specific specialisation. That volume comes from a busy clinical environment, which People’s Dental Hospital provides.

Faculty research involvement, inter-specialty academic forums and dissertation supervision are the three things that most directly determine the quality of an MDS programme. Go through the prominent faculty members page and the achievements section before making any comparison. Faculty academic backgrounds in the specific specialisation you are applying for are worth examining closely — dissertation supervision quality depends directly on it.

The Neighbourhood Dental Centre provides community clinical exposure that postgraduate students use for public health dentistry work and case diversity beyond the main hospital setting.

The alumni of People’s Dental Academy are now practicing across India and in international settings. Where past graduates went after MDS is the most reliable indicator of what the programme actually produces.

Specialist private practice is where the highest long-term earning ceiling sits. An orthodontist or prosthodontist running an established independent practice in a tier 1 or tier 2 Indian city typically earns significantly more than any salaried dental role available at the same career stage. The three years of MDS investment produces the qualification that makes that practice legally possible — you cannot advertise as a dental specialist in India without the MDS and DCI specialist registration.

Academic careers in dental colleges require MDS as the minimum qualification for lecturer and assistant professor positions. With further experience, MDS holders progress to associate professor, professor and head of department roles. India’s expanding dental college infrastructure — more colleges opening across tier 2 and tier 3 cities — means the demand for qualified dental faculty is consistent and growing.

Government specialist dental officer positions through state civil service examinations, UPSC and central health services carry structured pay scales, job security and benefits. The Indian Armed Forces recruit specialist dental officers through the Short Service Commission and direct entry routes — a consistently well-compensated and structured career path for MDS graduates.

International dentistry post-MDS requires licensing examinations in the destination country — NBDE in the USA, ORE in the UK, similar examinations in Australia and Canada. The MDS provides the clinical foundation. The licensing pathway and country-specific preparation are separate. Many People’s Dental Academy alumni have successfully completed international licensing and are practicing across the Gulf, UK and other markets.

Super-specialty and fellowship programmes in implantology, laser dentistry, cosmetic dentistry and oral oncology are available after MDS for those who want to go deeper into a specific area within their specialisation.

Should you pick this

MDS makes sense for BDS graduates who have clarity about a specific clinical area they want to master — who know whether it is orthodontics or surgery or endodontics or periodontics and who want to build the depth in that area that a general practice career does not produce.

It also makes sense for those targeting academic dentistry, government specialist positions, armed forces dental officer roles or international practice where a postgraduate qualification is either required or significantly differentiating.

The decision to do MDS immediately after BDS versus working for a few years first is a genuine consideration. Many candidates benefit from seeing general practice first — understanding what they want to specialise in through actual patient experience rather than assumed preference. Others know from early in BDS what direction they are heading. Both approaches produce good MDS candidates when the specialisation choice is genuinely aligned with what the person is drawn to.

Before choosing any MDS institution, check whether the clinical case load in your chosen specialisation is genuinely high or supplemented through rotation. Check whether dissertation supervision involves faculty who are active researchers in your specialisation area. Check DCI approval status directly — it should be current and verifiable, not simply stated.
