H. Department of Prosthodontics Crown & Bridge and Implantology

This branch of Dentistry deals with replacement of missing hard and soft tissue ( teeth and the surrounding hard and soft tissues) – by Removable or fixed prosthesis

  • Complete Denture
  • Removable Partial Denture
  • Fixed Partial Denture
  • Implants
  • Maxillofacial

Prosthodontics not only rehabilitates missing parts but also preserves what remain (teeth and hard tissues) also instilling a positive attitude in the patient to accept the new prosthesis is the biggest challenge for a Prosthodontist.

Rehabilitating an edentulous patient in one of the prime concern for a Prosthodontist

For the Prosthodontist fabricating a successful CD – not only deals with delivering a prosthesis but also instilling a sense of acceptance and motivating the edentulous patient as the patients attitude and mental state plays a major role in the successful functioning and wearing of a CD prosthesis.

Most of the times dealing with a totally edentulous patient involves – geriatric patients. Management of geriatric patients involves system diseases, psychological management and various age related factors that need to be overcome during rehabilitation of the prosthesis.

Guiding and counseling the patients regarding various treatment modalities such as removable prosthesis, fixed rehabilitation,  preserving the remaining hard and soft tissues and primarily  accepting the type of rehabilitation that is appropriate for the particular condition.

Removable partial denture prosthesis – deals with cast partial denture, flexible dentures and the basic heat cure acrylic partial denture. Selecting the suitable removable prosthesis for the individual depends upon the remaining teeth, carious lesion and the no of teeth to be restored.

Therefore the appropriate diagnosis and treatment planning that suggest the suitable variety of removable appliance is a very important aspects taught to the MDS students and enables them to fulfill the above criteria at the end of three years.

Prevent and intercept the developing malocclusions in case of a patient with partially missing dentition which involves full mouth rehabilitation.

Rehabilitating and restoring occlusion, balancing occlusion in Complete Denture cases, restoring Temporo Mandibular Joint function by correcting the occlusion and thus the muscle functioning activity related to biomechanics of the Temporo Mandibular Joint.

Rehabilitation in the form of fixed prosthesis –  Includes crown and bridge, implants, implant supported bridges, single tooth and tissue supported implants

Restoring the boney defects and soft tissues lost prior to placement of an implant deals with bone grafting and preparing the bed for receiving the implant to restore the missing tooth.

Maxillofacial prosthesis in case of patients with malignancies, leading to partial or complete maxillectomy a mandibular hemi section.

Patients with cleft lip, palate or any kind of acquired or congenital defects – need rehabilitation and prosthesis.

Thus a Prosthodontist at the end of 3 years deals with both fixed and removable prosthesis, hard and soft tissue defects as well as the mental attitudes of the patients in terms of accepting a prosthesis.
