Nursing admissions in Madhya Pradesh do not work the way they do in most other states. There is no direct admission. No management quota walk-in. Every seat government or private — goes through one exam: the Pre-Nursing Selection Test or PNST.
If you are in 12th right now, or just finished, and nursing is where you want to go, PNST is the one thing standing between you and a college seat.
What the Exam Actually Is
PNST is conducted by the Government of Madhya Pradesh. It is a written objective test — multiple choice questions from Biology, Physics, Chemistry, English, and General Knowledge. Biology carries the most weight. The paper is at 10+2 level, nothing beyond that. Duration is 2 hours. No negative marking in most years, but always check the current year’s official notification before assuming.
The exam is held at centres across MP. Results come out as a state merit list. After that, counselling begins.
Who is Eligible
For B.Sc. Nursing — Physics, Chemistry, and Biology in 12th is mandatory. Minimum 45% in PCB and English combined. For GNM — same subjects, but the cutoff is 40%. Age limits are set by the Madhya Pradesh Nursing Council and change slightly each year, so check the latest notification.
For Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing, you need a completed GNM plus one year of clinical experience. M.Sc. Nursing requires B.Sc. Nursing with 55% and a year of work experience.
How Seats Are Allotted
Once results are out, the state releases a merit list. Counselling happens in rounds. You pick your college based on your rank and what is available. Documents are verified on the spot. Only after that does admission get confirmed.
Higher rank, more options. That is how it works.
Choosing the Right College
Clearing PNST is the first step. Where you spend the next three or four years is the bigger decision.
People’s College of Nursing & Research Centre (PCNRC) in Bhopal has been running since 2005. INC approved, recognised by MPNRC, and part of People’s University. The college sits inside a campus that has a 1500-bed multi-specialty hospital attached to it. Students start clinical postings early — ICU, OT, OPD, emergency — not just in the final year.
The college has over 39,000 alumni. More than 4,900 students are currently enrolled across nursing programmes. The library has 82,000 books. Two decades of consistent output.
Fee Structure at PCNRC
B.Sc. Nursing — Rs. 1,32,000 per year. GNM — Rs. 60,000 per year. Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing — Rs. 83,000 per year. M.Sc. Nursing — Rs. 1,38,000 per year. All fees are as per MPPURC guidelines.
Documents to Keep Ready
Before counselling, get these in order: 10th and 12th mark sheets with originals and three sets of photocopies, Aadhaar card, domicile certificate, caste and income certificate, school leaving certificate, medical fitness certificate, and 8 passport size photographs. Gap certificate if there is a break in studies. Candidates from outside MP Board need an equivalency certificate too.
For Preparation
NCERT Biology is the backbone of the paper. Get that right first. Physics and Chemistry need to be conceptually clear — nothing advanced. Previous years’ PNST papers give you a real sense of the pattern and timing. Attempting those under exam conditions helps more than just reading through them.
Start early. The paper is not difficult if the basics are solid.
